Archaeological findings claim that people lived in the neighborhood of Mtskheta from 2nd millennium BC. Located on the crossroad of Europe and Asia, Mtskheta had very important strategic and economic advantages till late middle ages. It used to be the capital of the Eastern Georgian kingdom of Iberia from the 4th c BC through the 5th c AD, when King Vakhtang Gorgasali moved his court to Tbilisi.

In the morning pick up from the hotel. Drive to Mtskheta to visit UNESCO sites: Svetitskhoveli Cathedral 11th c and Jvari monastery 6th c. In the middle of the tour have lunch with Georgian dishes. After lunch continue exploration of the town. Visit  Samtavro and Shiomgvime monasteries. In the evening drive back to Tbilisi.


Jvari monastery 6th c. - is the culmination of artistic and architectural aspirations in early Georgian Christian architecture.

Svetitskhoveli Cathedral 11th c. - is one of the most sacred places in whole Georgia, with the Christ’s robe preserved in the Cathedral.

Samtavro monastery - located in ancient king family’s garden includes cathedral of 11th c and 4th c church, where St. Nino prayed.

Shiomgvime monastery - was founded in 6th c. by St. Father Shio, one of the 13 monks from Antioquia
